Yan Diomande, Ivory Coast’s New Gem Lighting Up Europe and AFCON
Ivory Coast may no longer boast icons like Drogba or the Tourés, but a new name is quickly capturing attention. Yan Diomande is emerging as the Elephants’ new reference point.
A Rapid Rise From Obscurity

Ivory Coast may no longer feature legends like Didier Drogba, Yaya Touré or Kolo Touré, but the Elephants have found a thrilling new figure to believe in: Yan Diomande. Born in Abidjan in 2006, the winger’s ascent has been nothing short of spectacular.
Just a year ago, Diomande was honing his game in the United States with DME Academy. On March 29 — barely ten months ago — he made his professional debut with Leganés against Real Madrid. Today, after a €20 million move last summer, RB Leipzig already value him at a staggering €100 million.
Making Waves in the Bundesliga
Diomande’s impact on German football has been immediate and emphatic. In just 14 Bundesliga matches, he has delivered seven goals and four assists, quickly becoming one of the league’s most feared wide players.
At 19 years and 22 days, he became the second-youngest player ever to score a hat-trick in the Bundesliga. He also leads the league in successful dribbles (42), ranks seventh in shots on target (13), and earned the Bundesliga Rookie of the Month award in December.
Europe Takes Notice
Unsurprisingly, Europe’s elite are already circling. Bayern Munich and Manchester United have both been linked with the Ivorian winger, though Leipzig remain firm in their stance.
“Our aim is to keep players with us for more than one year,” said Marcel Schäfer, Leipzig’s sporting director. “Otherwise, you can’t build consistency.”
AFCON Breakout With Ivory Coast
As if his club form were not enough, Diomande has also become one of the standout performers at the Africa Cup of Nations. The former Leganés man led Ivory Coast to a quarterfinal berth with a commanding 3–0 win over Burkina Faso, scoring once and earning Man of the Match honors.
In just 75 minutes, he created four scoring chances, completed six of eight dribbles, took three shots, and recorded six recoveries, underlining his all-around influence.
Africa’s New Dribbling King
According to Opta, Diomande has been Africa’s most effective dribbler at the tournament, completing 16 of 27 take-ons. He also leads in slalom runs — carries involving multiple dribbles — with seven, reinforcing his reputation as a constant one-on-one threat.
Back home, excitement is building fast. “Everyone knows Yan is a great player,” said teammate Amad Diallo. “We’re very close off the pitch, and that helps us on it.”
“We’re both selfless,” added the Manchester United winger. “If I can pass to him, I do. If he can pass to me, he does.”
Diomande has bared his teeth — and for Ivory Coast, his rise already feels like footballing gold.
