Bayern Munich Retires the Number "5" Shirt in Honor of Franz Beckenbauer
Bayern Munich has decided to retire the number '5' shirt in honor of Franz Beckenbauer, one of the club's greatest legends and a giant in German football, who passed away on January 7 of this year. This decision was made by the General Assembly of the club this Sunday.
An Emotional Tribute
The event, dedicated mainly to the 'Kaiser', included an emotional speech from president Herbert Hainer, who said: "Dear Franz, you made the club what it is today: synonymous with the greatest success, a unique style, and deep humanity. As a player, coach, president, and teammate, you gave FC Bayern the charisma it still impacts today."
Hainer continued with heartfelt words: "Dear Franz, we miss you. But what remains and unites us is your memory." He also highlighted that Beckenbauer is the greatest personality in the club's history, and organized a special exhibition titled 'Forever Our Kaiser', with items from the former player and coach's career, some of which were provided by his wife, Heidi, who also took the stage, along with his son Joel.
An Immortal Legacy
In this emotional context, Hainer proposed that the '5' shirt should never be used again, reserving it for a unique legacy. "It will be reserved for a unique legacy because our club and its history are simply unimaginable without Franz," said the president.
Hainer also expressed his confidence in coach Vincent Kompany, whom he trusts to bring Bayern back to the path of titles. He also confirmed the renewal of Jan-Christian Dreesen as vice president, highlighted the signing of Michael Diederich as an advisor, calling him "a top reinforcement," and praised the club’s women’s team and basketball team.
Finally, the president announced a record total revenue of 1.017 billion euros (with net profits of 62.7 million) and a membership of 382,000 club affiliates. His goal is to reach 400,000 members as a gift for the club’s 125th anniversary next year.
