The excitement grows with the official announcement of the groups for the TotalEnergies CAF Championship (CHAN) 2024, a tournament that showcases local African talent and brings together teams from across the continent. The event, which will take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in 2025, now has its groups defined after a spectacular draw in Nairobi, where moments of great enthusiasm were experienced. The ceremony, broadcast live on CAF TV, was filled with music, dance, and the presence of African football legends such as McDonald Mariga, Mrisho Ngasa, and Hassan Wasswa.
The groups are as follows: Group A will feature Kenya, Morocco, Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zambia. Tanzania will lead Group B, alongside Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and Central African Republic. In Group C, Uganda will be joined by Niger, Guinea, and two teams still to be confirmed. Finally, Group D will be headed by Senegal, the current champion, and will include Congo, Sudan, and Nigeria.
This draw also confirmed that the three co-hosting countries, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, will occupy the top spots in their respective groups. Senegal, as the defending champion, will be the group leader of D. The participation of these teams will not only increase competitiveness but also provide an important advantage by playing at home, with the aim of progressing deep into the tournament.
The CHAN 2024 will be a unique showcase for domestic league players, as it is the only continental tournament where players from foreign clubs are not allowed to participate. This edition is also marked by the presence of a new trophy, which, with its 54 lines, symbolizes Africa’s unity, and a significant increase in prize money, which has risen by 75%, totaling 10.4 million dollars for the teams that go far in the competition.
The countdown to CHAN 2024 has begun, and with this new stage, expectations rise as the tournament continues to establish itself as a vital platform for African football. Without a doubt, fans across the continent will be eagerly watching to see how the matches unfold and which team will claim the title next year.
