Concern Over ‘El Loco’ Gatti’s Critical Condition
Former Argentine goalkeeper Hugo ‘El Loco’ Gatti, 80 years old, is facing a complicated health situation after undergoing hip surgery due to a fracture. Although the surgery was successful, the post-operative recovery has been complicated by pneumonia and kidney failure, leading to his admission to intensive care.

According to reports from the Argentine press, the legendary goalkeeper, known for his time at clubs like Boca Juniors, River Plate, and Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, suffered an accident in February while walking his dog, which led to the hip surgery. However, a virus entered through the operated area, triggering an infection that affected his respiratory system.
Health Complications and a Fragile History
This isn’t the first time Gatti’s health has raised concerns. In 2020, the former player was in critical condition after contracting COVID-19 in Spain. He managed to recover after a lengthy hospitalization. Additionally, in June 2024, he experienced a heavy personal loss with the death of his wife, Nacha Nodar, with whom he had shared more than five decades of life.
His current condition is being closely monitored, and he remains under observation in intensive care. His sons, Federico and Lucas, have been by his side during this challenging time, offering unwavering support.
Throughout his career, Gatti left an indelible mark on Argentine football. With Boca Juniors, he won two Copa Libertadores (1977 and 1978), an Intercontinental Cup, and multiple domestic titles. Known for his daring style and footwork, he redefined the role of a goalkeeper, inspiring future generations.
After retiring, he became a media personality, appearing on shows like El Chiringuito in Spain and Fútbol sin Manchas in Argentina. In 2023, Boca Juniors honored him with a statue at La Bombonera, a tribute that deeply moved him. Today, the football world is closely following his recovery, hoping for his swift return to health.
