Frenkie de Jong Leaves the Netherlands Training Camp
Both Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong and Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk will miss the upcoming Nations League match against Bosnia.
With the Netherlands already securing their spot in the Nations League quarterfinals, coach Ronald Koeman has decided to release Frenkie de Jong and Virgil van Dijk from the squad ahead of Tuesday’s match against Bosnia. The decision comes as the Dutch team cannot surpass second place in their group, with Germany already locking in the top spot and home-field advantage for the next stage.
This move allows both players to focus on their club commitments. For De Jong, it means avoiding unnecessary risks ahead of Barcelona’s upcoming La Liga match against Celta Vigo on Saturday. The midfielder recently returned to action with the national team after 433 days, playing 68 minutes in the 4-0 win over Hungary in Amsterdam on Saturday.
Frenkie de Jong: "I'm Not 100% Yet"
After his return to the pitch, De Jong admitted he is still working his way back to full fitness following his injury. "Normally, I feel like I get back to my level quickly after an injury, but this time it’s different. I still feel discomfort at certain moments and need to regain the confidence to do certain things," the midfielder explained. He emphasized that playing more matches and training will be crucial for his recovery. "I hope the pain will go away on its own, and my form will return naturally," he added.
Strategic Decision for the Netherlands
With nothing at stake in their final group match, the Netherlands prioritize the health and readiness of their key players. This strategic decision benefits both the national team’s future prospects and clubs like Barcelona and Liverpool, who rely heavily on these stars for their ongoing campaigns.
The Netherlands will close out the group stage against Bosnia but have their sights set on the Nations League quarterfinals, where the stakes will be significantly higher.
