Germany Calls Up a Player from Another Country
The German Football Federation (DFB) found itself in an unusual situation when announcing its squad for the upcoming FIFA matches against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Hungary. Although the roster included usual stars like Kai Havertz from Arsenal, Jamal Musiala from Bayern Munich, and Antonio Rüdiger from Real Madrid, one unexpected name caught the press's attention: Dario Sits.
This 20-year-old forward, virtually unknown and born in Latvia, made headlines due to an error in the selection process. Sits, currently on loan at Parma from the modest Dutch second-division club Helmond Sport, recently debuted with his national team, Latvia. The closest he has ever come to wearing the German jersey was in 2022, when Latvia faced Germany in the U-21 category.
The DFB quickly clarified the situation, explaining that Sits's name appeared on the roster due to “a technical error in the database.” Once they realized the mistake, they corrected the list and issued an explanation to the AP agency.
Aside from this incident, Germany's squad announcement held few surprises. Highlights include the return of Havertz and Musiala, both back from injury. Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega will replace Marc-André ter Stegen, who remains sidelined, and Manuel Neuer is also absent. This allows opportunities for other goalkeepers like Alexander Nübel and Oliver Baumann.
Dario Sits's mistaken call-up will be remembered as a humorous footnote in recent German team history, proving that even the most organized federations can occasionally experience minor data-management mishaps.
