Messi and Argentina Top the FIFA Ranking
Although the French national team had the chance to end the year in first place in the world ranking, they must settle for second place, behind Lionel Messi's Argentina.
After the final matchday of the Nations League group stage, in which France defeated Italy 3-1, the French secured a spot in the quarterfinals, but they were unable to reclaim the top spot in the ranking, which they haven't held since September 2018.
Meanwhile, Argentina held onto the number one position thanks to a 1-0 victory over Peru in a World Cup 2026 qualifier, with a decisive goal by Lautaro Martínez. European champions Spain complete the podium, while England finishes in fourth place.
