Pedri's Emotional Return to the Stadium Where It All Began
Barcelona midfielder Pedri González is gearing up for a particularly meaningful match as he takes the field at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium in his homeland, representing the reigning European champion Spanish national team.
"This is the stadium of my home, my land. I don't think I'll ever forget this game. I'm really looking forward to it and can’t wait to enjoy it," Pedri shared during the pre-match press conference ahead of Spain's clash with Switzerland on Monday under coach Luis de la Fuente.
These days mark a nostalgic journey for Pedri, as he reconnects with his childhood memories, including his early football days with teams like Laguna and Tegueste before signing with UD Las Palmas.
"Tenerife is my home. Every time I can, I come back to enjoy the island, my family, and my lifelong friends," said the Tenerife-born star. Pedri, along with fellow Canarian teammates Ayoze Pérez and Yeremy Pino, is eager to "bring joy to the people" as they embrace the opportunity to play "at home."
Reflecting on the national team’s last match of the year, Pedri rated their performance a nine, acknowledging that "there's always room for improvement and winning every game," referencing the goalless draw against Serbia in the competition's first round. Still, he called it "an incredible year" that he hopes to cap off "with a victory."
As for his contract renewal with FC Barcelona, Pedri assured fans that he’s "calm" and leaving the matter to his agents, noting there haven’t been any recent updates.
