Peruvian Player Dies After Lightning Strike on Football Field in Central Country
A Peruvian footballer, defender José Hugo de la Cruz Meza, passed away this Sunday after being struck by lightning during a match that also left at least one person injured, local media reported.
In addition to the deceased defender, goalkeeper Juan Choca is in serious condition with severe burns. The health status of other players who were also struck by lightning remains unknown.
The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. (21:00 GMT) at the Coto Coto stadium in Chicha, located in the Huancayo region, where two local teams, Juventud Bellavista and Familia Chocca, were playing under a storm.
A video shows the exact moment when the lightning struck several players who collapsed simultaneously on the field. The lightning hit seconds after the match was suspended due to the storm, as the players were leaving the field.
Local media reported that the injured were immediately taken to the Carrión Hospital in Huancayo, where doctors confirmed José Hugo de la Cruz Meza's death upon arrival.
