Ronald Araujo: Leaving Barcelona for Juventus?
The future of Ronald Araujo at FC Barcelona is more uncertain than ever. Despite being a defensive stalwart and recently captaining the team in their Copa del Rey victory, contract renewal talks between the Uruguayan center-back and the club remain at a standstill. This impasse has sparked the interest of several top European clubs, with Juventus emerging as the latest contender to secure his signature.
Stalled Renewal Talks and Tension at Barcelona
Negotiations over Araujo's contract, set to expire in June 2026, have dragged on for months without significant progress. Reports from within the club indicate key disagreements on financial terms and other contract details. The lack of resolution is concerning for Barcelona, as Araujo is considered a cornerstone of Hansi Flick's long-term project.
Speaking after Barcelona’s Copa victory in Barbastro, where he returned to action after a six-month injury layoff, Araujo offered an ambiguous update about his future:
"We’re talking, we’ll see what happens."
Since joining Barcelona in 2018, Araujo has become a vital presence both on and off the pitch, gaining admiration across Europe—a factor complicating the club's renewal efforts.
Juventus Enters the Picture
Amid their defensive struggles, Juventus has emerged as a serious suitor for Araujo. With injuries to Gleison Bremer and Cabal, as well as the anticipated departure of Danilo, the Italian giants are keen to bolster their backline. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus is exploring the possibility of acquiring Araujo in the January transfer window through a loan deal with an option to buy. However, Barcelona is reportedly not interested in this arrangement.
While Juventus’s top defensive target remains David Hancko, Araujo is seen as an attractive alternative alongside names like Antonio Silva and Kevin Danso. Juventus hopes to strengthen their squad and climb back up the Serie A table after a lackluster first half of the season under Thiago Motta.
A Critical Decision Ahead
Barcelona is determined not to let Araujo leave for free in 2026 if renewal talks fail. Despite coach Hansi Flick emphasizing his role as "a leader and a captain," the club is reportedly considering selling Araujo if an agreement cannot be reached.
While the center-back pairing of Pau Cubarsí and Iñigo Martínez has performed well in recent matches, potentially softening the blow of Araujo's departure, the club’s priority remains securing his long-term future at Camp Nou.
