The Controversial Return of Courtois to Belgium
After more than a year and a half away from the squad due to a conflict with former coach Domenico Tedesco, the Real Madrid shot-stopper will once again wear the gloves for the Red Devils.
The relationship between Courtois and the Belgian federation deteriorated in June 2023 when the goalkeeper felt disrespected after not being given the captain’s armband in Kevin De Bruyne's absence. Instead, the captaincy was awarded to Romelu Lukaku, which angered the keeper, leading him to leave the training camp and later announce that he would not return as long as Tedesco remained in charge.
Now, with a new coach at the helm, Courtois has been convinced to return, though his decision has not been well received by some teammates. Backup goalkeeper Koen Casteels, who started in the last European Championship, has announced his departure from the national team, expressing his discontent with how the federation facilitated the Real Madrid player’s return.
"I find it strange that the federation has changed its stance like this, rolling out the red carpet for him," criticized Casteels, who suggested he is not the only player in the locker room with such concerns.
For his part, Garcia avoided stirring controversy, stating that he will discuss the matter with the team’s leaders and that the captaincy decision will be his alone. "I know that in Belgium, the tradition is to give the armband to the player with the most international caps, but if I find it suitable, I’ll follow that. If not, I’ll make another decision," he said.
More familiar faces return under Garcia
Along with Courtois, other veterans previously left out by Tedesco have also been recalled. Players such as Dries Mertens, Christian Benteke, Michy Batshuayi, Axel Witsel, and Yannick Carrasco are back, signaling a shift in the team’s approach.
Additionally, Garcia has introduced fresh talent, calling up Nicolas Raskin, Bryan Heynen, and Jorthy Mokio for the first time, while leaving out Belgium-Moroccan Chemsdine Talbi, who opted to represent Morocco.
Courtois’ return undoubtedly marks the beginning of a new era for the Red Devils, though the decision to reinstate him remains a divisive issue both on and off the pitch.
