Xabi Alonso dodges questions about his future
Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso dodged questions about his future in a press conference, the first since it was known that Thomas Tuchel would not continue at Bayern Munich next season.
"Maybe you have some questions about my future. I'm sorry, but I have nothing new to say," Xabi Alonso said at the beginning of the press conference.
He also did not respond to subsequent questions about whether his initial statement implied that he was rejecting the possibility of going to Bayern.
"I have nothing new to say," he responded several times, even when asked if he plans to fulfill his contract with Bayer Leverkusen, valid until 2026, and if he will continue to be their coach next season.
"I am now, that's for sure. And there's nothing new to say about the future. We'll see. It's not the right time for me to talk too much about it," he emphasized.
The Spanish coach had already faced similar questions when it was known that Jürgen Klopp would not continue at Liverpool next season.
Xabi Alonso took over Leverkusen halfway through last season when the team was fighting to avoid relegation, and he qualified them for the Europa League. This season, they lead the Bundesliga with an eight-point advantage over Bayern and are undefeated in all competitions.
Xabi Alonso's future has been repeatedly linked to Liverpool, Bayern, and Real Madrid, teams where he played as a player.
According to German media, the Spanish coach has a contract release clause at Leverkusen that is around 20 million euros.
