German legend Didi Hamann reignited the debate over Germany’s goalkeeping situation by stating that it is “very likely” that Manuel Neuer could return to the national team if he maintains his current level at Bayern Munich.
The former Liverpool midfielder, pointed out that Marc-André ter Stegen’s struggles at Barcelona could open the door once again for the historic goalkeeper.
Neuer, who retired from international football after Euro 2024, is experiencing a second wind under Vincent Kompany, playing a key role in Bayern’s 2024-25 Bundesliga title. His leadership, reflexes, and experience have impressed the club, which is reportedly considering extending his contract beyond 2026.
“I think it’s very likely that Manuel Neuer will play at the World Cup, as long as he keeps this level,” Hamann said on Sky Sport. “If he stays healthy, it will happen. There’s no one like him.”
Hamann not only praised the Bayern keeper but was also blunt about Marc-André ter Stegen’s current situation at Barcelona.
“Ter Stegen first has to find a new club, ideally one that plays in Europe. As harsh as it sounds, for me, the train has left,” said the former international.
This reflects growing concern in Germany: with Ter Stegen injured at the start of the season and Oliver Baumann lacking international experience, Germany faces a goalkeeper crisis less than a year before the 2026 World Cup.
Ter Stegen’s season at Barcelona has been disastrous. Reports from Spain state that Hansi Flick relegated him to third-choice goalkeeper, behind Joan García and Wojciech Szczęsny, following internal conflicts with the board.
The situation began when the club tried to sign García without notifying him, which Ter Stegen saw as disrespectful after years of loyalty. His initial refusal to sign a medical report registering new signings escalated the conflict, resulting in sanctions and losing the captaincy.
With the 2026 World Cup approaching, warnings are clear: coach Julian Nagelsmann stated he will only take goalkeepers who play regularly, while Bernd Schuster insists Ter Stegen must move clubs “as soon as possible.”
In this scenario, Manuel Neuer’s return could be more than a nostalgic idea. The Bayern keeper not only remains competitive but also retains respect and leadership in the German squad.
“If he keeps this up, they will call him. It has to happen,” Hamann said.
Although Neuer retired after nearly 120 international caps, his current form and lack of alternatives put him back on the radar for Germany’s 2026 World Cup.
While Ter Stegen fights to regain his spot at a turbulent Barça, the eternal number one could be preparing for one final dance with Germany.
As Hamann said, the train of history has not yet left for Manuel Neuer.
