Florian Wirtz to Liverpool: Most Expensive Signing in Premier League History at $158 Million
Liverpool has reached an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen for the transfer of Florian Wirtz in a deal worth $158 million, making it the most expensive signing in Premier League history. The 22 year old German midfielder will sign a five year contract with the Anfield club, running until 2030, as reported by The Athletic on Thursday.

The transfer includes an initial payment of $136 million, plus an additional $21 million in performance related add ons.
A Record-Breaking Transfer in the Premier League
This figure breaks the previous record set by Moisés Caicedo move to Chelsea, which totaled $154 million. For Liverpool, the reigning Premier League champions, this represents a historic investment as they begin a new chapter under manager Arne Slot.
In recent days, there had been speculation of a potential $173 million deal the amount initially demanded by Bayer Leverkusen, with whom Wirtz is under contract until June 30, 2027. However, both clubs reached a final agreement for a slightly lower sum that includes various performance bonuses.
Bayern Drops Out of the Race
Bayern Munich also expressed interest in the midfielder this summer, but ultimately pulled out due to the high asking price. Liverpool persistence and Wirtz own desire to join the Reds proved decisive in securing the deal.
One of Europe Brightest Young Talents
Florian Wirtz was a key figure in Bayer Leverkusen recent success. Last season, he recorded 16 goals and 15 assists in 45 matches, helping the team finish second in the Bundesliga and reach the Champions League round of 16.
In the 2023/24 campaign, he played a starring role under Xabi Alonso, guiding Leverkusen to its first-ever Bundesliga title with an undefeated season. He also helped the team reach the Europa League final, ending the season with 18 goals and 20 assists in 49 appearances.
The deal is expected to be officially announced in the coming hours, confirming one of the biggest blockbuster transfers of a summer window that’s only just getting started.
