Xabi Alonso: "Being Part of Leverkusen's History is Very Special"
The Spanish coach of Bayer Leverkusen, Xabi Alonso, was ecstatic about the success achieved with the club, as well as personally, with the first Bundesliga title in the history of the club.
Alonso, who could barely finish the press conference, bathed in beer by his players in the conference room, highlighted the work done by his squad, which has not lost any matches so far this season.
“Every title as a player was special. But logically, in this new stage as a coach, too. I enjoyed the promotion with Sanse a lot, but this is incredible. Above all, being part of Leverkusen's history and winning the first Bundesliga feels very special," he emphasized.
Alonso emphasized the way success was achieved: "In addition to the result, how we achieved it matters. It's time to celebrate because we deserved it."
"Celebrate with German beer. Monday, day off. We must enjoy the moment. This goes very fast," added Xabi Alonso, who highlighted that he did not see himself as champion "until before the match against Hoffenheim," in matchday 27, on March 30th.
"We wanted to win, but we weren't talking about the title. From Hoffenheim we already saw it clearly and it was the goal. There were already many reasons to think that we could achieve it," said the Bayer Leverkusen coach.
"The title is a joy not only for the club, but also for the fans and the team. I want to share this trophy with other legends who were here before at the club. This is historic," insisted Xabi Alonso.
Bayer Leverkusen could achieve an unprecedented treble. With the Bundesliga secured, it will play the final of the German Cup and has the pass to the Europa League semi-finals already in hand.
"We want more, we want the Cup and also the Europa League," warned Alonso.
