Christopher Nkunku is returning to the club where he produced the best version of his career. The 28-year-old French forward is heading back to RB Leipzig after difficult spells with Chelsea and Milan, hoping to rediscover the form that made him one of Europe's most exciting attacking players.

Christopher Nkunku is returning to RB Leipzig on loan from Milan, with a €28 million purchase option. The French forward is going back to the club where he produced the best football of his career and will replace Yan Diomande, who has joined Real Madrid.
The agreement is structured as a loan from Milan, with RB Leipzig paying €3 million for the temporary transfer. The German club will also have a €28 million purchase option, meaning the move could become permanent at the end of the season.
Nkunku arrives as the replacement for Yan Diomande, who has recently joined Real Madrid. His previous experience at Leipzig, along with his knowledge of the club and city, played an important role in his decision to return.
His first spell at RB Leipzig was outstanding. In the Bundesliga, he made 119 appearances, scoring 47 goals and providing 46 assists, establishing himself as one of the most productive attacking players in German football.
His performances eventually attracted major European clubs, with Chelsea paying more than €60 million for his services in 2023. However, his time in England failed to reach the expected level.
With Chelsea, Nkunku scored only six goals in 38 appearances, a significant drop from the numbers he had produced in Germany.
The forward subsequently moved to Milan, who paid around €37 million for him and handed him a contract until 2030. However, he again struggled to consistently demonstrate his full potential, scoring seven goals in 32 matches.
Now, Nkunku has another opportunity to rebuild his career in a familiar environment.
“My connection with RB Leipzig is special. Even after my transfer, I continued to follow what was happening with the Red Bulls, and I am ready to write a new chapter,” Nkunku said following the announcement.
Club sporting director Marcel Schäfer also emphasized the importance of the signing and revealed that the player turned down interest from other major European clubs because he wanted to return to Leipzig.
“We are very happy that Christo is back. He already demonstrated in Leipzig the extraordinary quality he has and that he can decide matches,” Schäfer said.
The move represents an important opportunity for both sides. Nkunku is looking to regain his confidence and status, while RB Leipzig hope the Frenchman can once again become the decisive player who impressed throughout the Bundesliga.
