VfL Wolfsburg Dismisses Bauer as Coach in the Midst of a Relegation Battle
The German team parted ways with the current coach amid the relegation battle
Bauer is no longer a coach
Wolfsburg announced on Sunday the immediate dismissal of Daniel Bauer as the club's Bundesliga coach and Peter Christiansen as the sports manager, amid a struggle to avoid relegation after losing 1-2 at home against Hamburg on Saturday and after nine defeats in fifteen matches.
"This decision has been anything but easy for us. We were hoping to achieve the turnaround together. After analyzing the situation as a whole, we have come to the conclusion that we need to give the team a new impetus to achieve permanence," emphasized Wolfsburg's sports director, Pirmin Schwegler, in a statement.
He expressed the club's gratitude to Bauer for his commitment to the professional players, but also for his long career as a coach at the Wolfsburg academy.
Who will take over as coach?
The club will soon announce who will succeed 43-year-old Bauer as coach of Wolfsburg, a position for which, according to the media, Dieter Hecking, who had previously coached the team, is the favorite.
Bauer took over as head coach in November of last year, initially replacing Paul Simonis on an interim basis, before being officially appointed to the position in December.
Meanwhile, the Wolfsburg board of directors announced last night the replacement of 51-year-old Christiansen from his role as sports manager, a position he had held since the summer of 2024.
We thank Peter for his great commitment to Wolfsburg. As a sports manager, he successfully managed the personnel restructuring in women's football together with our sports management. Unfortunately, in men's football, the expected sporting results were not achieved. "That is why we have decided to end our collaboration with him," explained the chairman of the club's board of directors, Sebastian Rudolph.
The situation of Wolfsburg
In 17th place in the standings, Wolfsburg is facing its first relegation to the second division since its promotion in 1997.
