Aubameyang Edges Closer to Playing in His First World Cup
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is one step closer to fulfilling one of the few remaining dreams in his career: playing in a FIFA World Cup. The Al Qadsiah striker scored a decisive brace to lead Gabon to a 2-1 away victory over Kenya in Matchday 4 of the CAF qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
The former Barcelona and Arsenal star opened the scoring with a low, clinical finish in the 16th minute and then doubled Gabon’s lead by converting a penalty in the 52nd. Michael Olunga pulled one back for Kenya in the 62nd minute, but the home side, coached by former South African striker Benni McCarthy, couldn’t complete the comeback.
Gabon leads Group F with momentum
This win marks Gabon’s third consecutive victory in Group F, pushing them to the top of the standings with 9 points, two ahead of Ivory Coast, though the Elephants have a game in hand.
📌 Only the group winners in African qualifying earn a direct spot at the 2026 World Cup in United States, Mexico, and Canada.
📌 The second-placed teams will enter an intercontinental playoff, keeping Gabon’s hopes alive even if they lose top spot.
A historic milestone in sight
At 34 years old, Aubameyang is nearing what would be a historic moment: playing in his first-ever World Cup. Despite a successful club career and multiple appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations, the world’s biggest stage has eluded him until now.
Currently enjoying a strong season in the Saudi Pro League, the forward has reclaimed a leading role with the national team after previous absences due to personal and professional reasons.
