Cerro Porteño Wins Away Against Melgar in Copa Libertadores
Cerro Porteño from Paraguay secured a crucial 1-0 win over Melgar from Peru in the first leg of the third phase of the Copa Libertadores. This result gives them an advantage for the return leg, which will be played in Asunción, bringing them closer to the group stage of the continental tournament. The winning goal came in the 34th minute of the first half, when Robert Piris da Motta converted a penalty after Carlos Cáceda, the Melgar goalkeeper, fouled Juan Iturbe.
Cerro Porteño had another opportunity to go ahead before the goal, but Carlos Cáceda saved a penalty from Cecilio Domínguez in the 19th minute. Despite being behind, Melgar tried to fight back but found Cerro Porteño’s defense solid and well-organized, not allowing any major scoring chances.
Visiting Strategy Pays Off
Melgar, who had shown strong form in the Copa Libertadores by eliminating Deportes Tolima and also in the Peruvian Apertura tournament, was unable to impose their game against a defensively disciplined opponent. Despite the altitude of Arequipa, which sits at about 2,300 meters above sea level, the Paraguayan side managed the pressure and kept the score in their favor. The return leg will be played on March 12 in Asunción, where Cerro Porteño will look to close out the tie and secure their spot in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores.
