How to watch: The 2024 Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana
Don't miss South America's soccer bonanza beginning on beIN SPORTS on Tuesday 2nd April.
What is the Copa Libertadores?
If you've watched the Copa Libertadores before on beIN SPORTS, then welcome back! If you're a newbie, then settle back on the sofa for nine-months of sensational South American soccer – at a time when you're not in the office.
On a basic level, the Copa Libertadores is South America's equivalent of the UEFA Champions League: 32 teams are divided into eight groups. The top two go through to the Last-16 and the start of the knockout rounds. A new champion will be crowned in Buenos Aires, Argentina on November 30th. From the altitude of the Andes, the humidity of Caribbean and the Antarctic winds of Argentina, the Copa Libertadores is the ultimate test in soccer.
Who are the favorites?
The Brazilians. It's always the Brazilians. Well, it has been for the past five years, with three different winners from the country: Palmeiras, Flamengo and most recently of all, Fluminense. This trio are set to be the front-runners once again, although River Plate will be looking to go one better than last year's finalists, Boca Juniors, and wrestling the title back for Argentina.
If you are looking for a surprise package then LDU Quito and Independiente del Valle are always competitive. Maybe Liverpool can do a double this season in two continents? Or maybe Always Ready will live up to their name?
Any stars to look out for?
The tournament that helped get recent LaLiga moves for Endrick and Vitor Roque is a cradle for great South American stars of the future. In 2024 we're particularly looking out for River Plate attacking midfielder, Claudio Echeverri, who is moving permanently to Manchester City at the end of the year, following the same path of Julian Alvarez.
Also on the radar, we have Ecuadorian midfielder, Kendry Paez at Independiente del Valle, who will be signing on with Chelsea in the summer of 2025 and joining up with Moises Caicedo, also out of the same club. However, the great feature about the Copa Libertadores is that new stars can come from any club at any time.
So, what about Boca Juniors?
Ah yes, the mighty Boca. The Argentinean side is in the Copa Sudamericana this year, the sister tournament of the Copa Libertadores, along with some other great names such as Internacional and Corinthians. You'll be able to catch all their matches across beIN SPORTS as well.
I'm in! What's next?
