Juan Izquierdo's Condition Worsens
The Uruguayan footballer collapsed after suffering a cardiac arrhythmia, and his condition is now "critical" after worsening in the last few hours.
Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo, who was hospitalized in Brazil after collapsing on the pitch during a Copa Libertadores match against São Paulo last Thursday, is in a "critical neurological condition," according to a medical report released on Monday.
The Nacional defender remains in the intensive care unit at São Paulo's Albert Einstein Hospital and is "dependent on mechanical ventilation," stated the report, which was signed by three doctors from the prestigious private clinic.
The 27-year-old player collapsed in the final minutes of the Libertadores round of 16 match due to a cardiac arrhythmia.
He was taken from Morumbi Stadium in an ambulance and immediately transferred to the hospital, where he arrived in "cardiac arrest of undetermined onset" and had to be resuscitated with a defibrillator.
On Sunday, the medical team at Albert Einstein reported that Izquierdo showed "progression of brain injury and increased intracranial pressure," though he remained under "intensive neurological care."
However, Monday's report states that his neurological condition is "critical."
Izquierdo is accompanied in São Paulo by his wife, their 2-year-old daughter, and his parents.
Uruguayan consul in São Paulo, Marta Echarte, who visited the footballer on Monday, told EFE that the doctors plan to keep Izquierdo sedated until Tuesday, "waiting to see how he responds" to his arrhythmia, "which was complicated by cerebral involvement."
Izquierdo's condition has shocked Uruguayan football, leading to the suspension of activities over the past weekend.
In Brazil, São Paulo players took to the field on Sunday at Morumbi Stadium wearing shirts with a message of support for Izquierdo.
"Stay strong, Izquierdo," read the blue shirts worn by the São Paulo team before their Brazilian league match against Vitória.
