Players Aiming to Secure Atlético Mineiro’s Second Libertadores Trophy
Atlético Mineiro, facing Botafogo in the upcoming Copa Libertadores final on Saturday, is one of Brazil's most storied clubs with over a century of history and a trophy cabinet that includes several league titles and one continental trophy.
While only performing averagely in this year’s league, positioned mid-table, the team led by Argentine coach Gabriel Milito is pinning its hopes on veteran striker Hulk to clinch the Libertadores.
Everson: Atlético's goalkeeper for the past four seasons. Despite an unremarkable league season, his commendable Libertadores performances have been crucial to the team’s final run.
Rodrigo Battaglia: The Argentine midfielder, formerly of Sporting Lisbon, has proven his worth in midfield, though Milito has recently deployed him in defense, an unfamiliar role for him.
Lyanco: A recent signing from Southampton, Lyanco joined Atlético in July to bolster their defense.
Junior Alonso: The Paraguayan defender has been with Atlético since 2020, following stints at Celta Vigo and Boca Juniors, and is a trusted player for the coach to counteract opponents.
Guilherme Arana: An Atlético player since 2020, the former Sevilla left-back has earned several call-ups to the Brazilian national team.
Gustavo Scarpa: Known for his precision left-footed strikes, a skill honed from his futsal days, the midfielder joined Atlético in 2023 from Nottingham Forest.
Alan Franco: The Ecuadorian midfielder, an international for his country, returned to Atlético in 2023 after loan spells with Charlotte in the US and Talleres in Argentina.
Fausto Vera: Another Argentine midfielder, a familiar face to Milito from their time at Argentinos Juniors, joined Atlético recently for about four million dollars from Corinthians.
Hulk: The team’s captain and leading idol, Hulk joined Atlético in 2021 after playing for Porto and various Asian teams. The 38-year-old striker has a Copa do Brasil and a league title to his name and has scored 19 goals in national and international tournaments in 2024.
Paulinho: Another key forward for Atlético. He has matched Hulk with 19 goals this year, including two in the last league match, returning after a month out due to injury.
Deyverson: Signed by the Belo Horizonte team in August this year after spells at Palmeiras and Spanish clubs like Deportivo Alavés and Levante, he has been crucial in this Libertadores campaign, scoring in key matches against Fluminense and River Plate.
