What Team Has the Most Copa Libertadores Titles?
The team that has lifted the trophy the most times is Argentine and has won it on 7 occasions. Since 1984, their record remains unbroken.
The Copa Libertadores raised the curtain on what is already the 65th edition of its history with Puerto Cabello's victory over Defensor. It's just the first match, and there's still a long way to go until the grand final in November.
It's that final match that holds the dreams of the 47 teams starting the competition, 19 of which begin from the preliminary stages that have just begun. Of all of them, only one will lift the prestigious trophy that crowns the CONMEBOL champion.
Speaking of champions, in the 64 editions that have been played so far, Argentina and Brazil have shared most of the titles. The balance, however, slightly favors Argentina, whose teams have won 25 cups, compared to the 23 won by Brazilian teams.
However, Brazil has dominated in recent years. Brazilian teams have been champions in six of the last seven editions of the tournament. In fact, the latest champion was Fluminense, whose victory over Boca Juniors allowed them to win their first Libertadores.
The most successful team in the tournament, however, is Argentine: Independiente, with 7 titles. The last of the seven was won in 1984, and since then, their record remains unbroken. No one else has reached that figure. Boca Juniors, who won 6, could have matched it in the last edition, but history was made by Fluminense.
With 5 crowns is Peñarol (Uruguay). With 4 are River Plate and Estudiantes de La Plata. With 3 are Nacional, Palmeiras, Santos, Flamengo, Sao Paulo, and Olimpia. 2 titles belong to Cruzeiro, Internacional, and Atlético Nacional. Closing with 1 title each are Colo Colo, Racing, Once Caldas, Argentinos Juniors, Vélez Sarsfield, Vasco da Gama, Liga de Quito, Corinthians, Atlético Mineiro, San Lorenzo, and the current champion Fluminense.
