Will Edinson Cavani Return for Boca Juniors Against Alianza Lima? Here’s What We Know
Boca Juniors faces a tough test this Tuesday as it hosts Alianza Lima in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores Phase 2. After a 1-0 loss in Peru, Fernando Gago’s team must win to stay alive in a tournament where expectations are high following a year-long absence.
Boca Juniors vs. Alianza Lima LIVE on beIN Sports this Tuesday, February 25, at 7:30 p.m. ET, 6:30 p.m. MT, and 4:30 p.m. PT.
Cavani Remains a Question Mark
One of the players Boca hopes to recover is Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan striker has been sidelined for four matches due to a minor vertebra fracture. According to journalist Leandro Aguilera of TyC Sports, Cavani trained with the squad on Sunday and will be included in the squad for Tuesday’s match.
The veteran forward also participated in a small-sided game with players who did not feature against Aldosivi. For Gago, his presence is crucial—not only for his attacking prowess but also for his leadership as team captain.
What Did Gago Say About Cavani’s Return?
After Boca’s 2-1 victory over Aldosivi, Gago addressed Cavani’s situation in a press conference.
"He has to deal with the pain; it’s up to him. We’ll see on Monday what decision he makes," the coach stated. The injury continues to cause discomfort in training, and Cavani himself will decide whether to play through the pain, receive an injection, or sit out the match.
A Key Goal Scorer for Boca
Regardless of his physical condition, Cavani’s presence is vital for Boca. He has been the team’s most prolific goal scorer at La Bombonera in recent years, and his experience in crucial matches makes him a key player. His leadership in the locker room is also invaluable.
Since joining Boca in 2023, Cavani has played 58 matches and scored 24 goals, making him the fourth-highest-scoring Uruguayan in the club’s history.
