Why Was the Start of Racing vs. Flamengo in the Copa Libertadores Delayed?
The Racing vs. Flamengo Copa Libertadores semifinal kicked off 20 minutes late after Flamengo’s bus was stuck in heavy traffic near the stadium, causing logistical delays before a high-tension night in Avellaneda.
Flamengo Bus Stuck on the Way to the Stadium
The Flamengo delegation found themselves stuck in heavy traffic near Puente Pueyrredón as they traveled to Avellaneda. With roads congested and security controls reinforced due to the massive fan presence surrounding the venue, the team bus came to a near standstill.
The “Mengão” only arrived at the stadium around 8:20 PM, much later than expected. With CONMEBOL’s regulations requiring a minimum warm-up and preparation period prior to the match, kickoff was officially moved to 9:50 PM.
In addition to the usual traffic, blocked access routes around the grounds — filled with fans and pre-match festivities — significantly contributed to the delay.
Racing Arrive Surrounded by Fireworks and Passion
While the visitors dealt with travel chaos, Racing arrived to a completely opposite scene. Thousands of loyal supporters escorted the team bus with fireworks, chants and a roaring atmosphere that electrified Avellaneda ahead of the decisive match.

After a 1-0 defeat at the Maracanã, the side led by Gustavo Costas was determined to use home-field advantage to overturn the aggregate score and keep alive their dream of a Libertadores final — something they haven’t reached since 1967. Meanwhile, Flamengo — a continental giant — aimed to advance once again to the most prestigious match in South American football.
