Atlético Mineiro completed a remarkable comeback and eliminated Santos in a dramatic penalty shootout. The Galo won the second leg 4-2, tied the series 4-4 on aggregate and goalkeeper Gabriel Delfim emerged as the hero with three penalty saves to secure a place in the Copa Sudamericana semifinals.
Mineiro entered the night facing a 2-0 deficit from the first leg at Vila Belmiro, but needed only 17 seconds to start its comeback.
Bernard scores after 17 seconds as Mineiro launches comeback
A Santos mistake allowed the hosts to immediately regain possession and Bernard managed to finish despite slipping inside the box, making it 1-0.
Before the 20-minute mark, Mineiro had already erased the first-leg deficit. Fred broke free and delivered a low cross that Reinier Jesus converted to make it 2-0.
Santos responded in the 27th minute when a Benjamín Rollheiser free kick ended with Lyanco accidentally sending the ball into his own net.
Reinier struck again before halftime, completing his brace to make it 3-1.
Gabigol strikes before Tomás Cuello forces penalties
Santos survived Mineiro's pressure and found what appeared to be a decisive goal in the 72nd minute, when Gabigol made it 3-2 and restored the Peixe's aggregate advantage.
But Mineiro had one final response.
With two minutes remaining, Tomás Cuello scored to make it 4-2, level the series at 4-4 on aggregate and force a penalty shootout.
Gabriel Delfim becomes the hero with three penalty saves
That was when Delfim took over.
The goalkeeper stopped Gabigol's opening penalty before also denying Schmidt and Arthur.
Mineiro converted three of its attempts and, despite Brazão saving Fred's penalty, won the shootout 3-1.
From two goals down at the start of the night to a place among the final four, Atlético Mineiro completed the comeback and will face the winner of Montevideo City Torque vs. Cienciano in the semifinals.
