Atletico Mineiro Take Advantage at RB Bragantino in 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana Round of 16 First Leg
A costly mistake proved decisive for the Toro Loco, who must now overturn the deficit in the second leg at Mineirão, home of Galo.
Atlético Mineiro struck first in the all-Brazilian 2026 Copa Sudamericana Round of 16 matchup. The Belo Horizonte side defeated Red Bull Bragantino 1-0 away from home, thanks to a goal from Argentine forward Tomás Cuello, and will take a narrow but valuable lead into the second leg.
The team coached by Eduardo Domínguez once again showcased the defensive solidity that has defined its continental campaign and will now have the opportunity to close out the tie at home, where it will look to secure a place in the quarterfinals.

Tomás Cuello Makes the Difference for Galo
The first half was evenly contested, with both sides battling for possession and creating few clear-cut chances in front of goal. Victor Hugo produced one of Atlético Mineiro’s most dangerous opportunities, while Sasha responded for Bragantino, although both attempts were dealt with by the goalkeepers.
The pattern continued for much of the second half until the decisive moment arrived. In the 72nd minute, Igor Gomes found Tomás Cuello with a precise pass, and the Argentine forward raced into the box to finish.
His initial effort was saved by goalkeeper Cleiton, but the rebound crossed the goal line to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Bragantino pushed forward in search of an equalizer, with Isidro Pitta among their main attacking threats. However, Atlético Mineiro’s defense held firm, while Everson made the necessary saves to preserve the advantage.
Atlético Mineiro Look to Finish the Job in Belo Horizonte
The victory represents an important step for the 2025 Copa Sudamericana runners-up, who continue to make a strong case for another deep continental run. In this year’s group stage, Atlético Mineiro finished top of their group with three wins, one draw and two defeats, earning a direct spot in the Round of 16.
Now, they will have the advantage of playing the decisive leg in front of their home supporters. A draw in the second leg will be enough for Atlético Mineiro to advance, while Bragantino must win to keep their continental hopes alive.
The São Paulo-based side, managed by Vagner Mancini, had to go through the playoff round to reach this stage, eliminating Sporting Cristal 1-0 on aggregate. They have also enjoyed a competitive campaign in the Brasileirão and currently sit in eighth place.
With a 1-0 victory in Bragança Paulista, Atlético Mineiro have landed the first blow and put the pressure firmly on Bragantino. The tie remains open, but the Belo Horizonte side now have both the advantage and home-field advantage as they look to secure their place in the 2026 Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals.
