Jordan Defeat Iraq and Advance to the Semifinals of the FIFA Arab Cup
Jordan Clinches Arab Cup Semifinal Spot With Gritty 1–0 Win Over Iraq
Jordan secured a place in the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 semifinals after a disciplined and hard-fought 1–0 victory over Iraq on Friday. The Jordan vs Iraq quarterfinal match was tightly contested from the start, with both national teams creating early chances in a first half defined by balance and intensity.
The breakthrough came in the 41st minute when Ali Olwan calmly converted a penalty following a handball inside the Iraqi box. It was Jordan’s fourth penalty goal of the tournament and gave the Jordan national team a crucial lead heading into halftime.
The Iraq national team responded strongly, dominating the second half with nearly 71% possession and 20 total shots as they pushed for an equalizer. Still, Jordan’s defensive structure held firm, denying Iraq any clear scoring opportunities and showcasing the discipline that has defined their Arab Cup 2025 campaign.
With this victory, Jordan football reaches the Arab Cup semifinals for the third time in its history, while Iraq—a four-time champion—exits the tournament. Jordan will now face Saudi Arabia, who advanced after defeating Palestine in extra time, setting up a high-stakes semifinal at the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025.
