EGYPT MADE THE MOST OF THEIR FAST START

Mahmoud Saber's early goal in the 5th minute and Mostafa Shobeir's penalty save from Mehdi Taremi in the 11th suggested the Pharaohs were in for a comfortable afternoon. It didn't turn out that way.

IR IRAN'S RESPONSE: FROM URGENCY TO BELIEF… AND HEARTBREAK

Ramin Rezaeian equalized in the 14th minute, and from that point the Asian side looked comfortable with a draw, knowing it could be enough to keep their Round of 16 hopes alive as one of the best third-placed teams.

But as Egypt faded, Iran grew stronger. The Persian Cheetahs pushed for a late winner and thought they had found it more than once, only to see two goals ruled out. Their dream of a famous victory slipped away in dramatic fashion.
