A World Cup very different from what he imagined

Bernardo Silva’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup fell far short of the expectations surrounding one of Portugal’s most experienced and talented players.

The midfielder began the tournament as a starter, but his role diminished as the matches went on. He later had to come off the bench and did not play a single minute in the match against Colombia.

His underwhelming individual performance was compounded by Portugal’s early elimination, as the team was knocked out of the competition after losing to Spain in the round of 16.

Bernardo Silva acknowledges his frustration

After the elimination, Bernardo Silva took to social media to share a message with Portuguese fans and publicly acknowledge the disappointment caused by the team’s result.

“It was a frustrating World Cup and a huge disappointment that it ended much earlier than we all imagined,” the midfielder said.

His words reflected both his personal dissatisfaction and the blow suffered by a team that had arrived at the tournament aiming to compete for the title.
