Davies taking injury recovery 'day by day' as World Cup draws closer
Canada face an anxious wait over the fitness of Alphonso Davies, with their World Cup opener only 10 days away.
Alphonso Davies is still unable to put a timeline on his recovery from a hamstring injury, with the Canada talisman taking things "day by day" as the World Cup draws closer.
Davies sustained the issue during the second leg of Bayern Munich's Champions League semi-final tie against Paris Saint-Germain last month.
He sat out the end of the Bundesliga season and Bayern's DFB-Pokal final win over Stuttgart, having only returned from an anterior cruciate ligament injury in December.
The jet-heeled full-back was limited to just eight starts and 841 minutes across all competitions for Bayern last season, having never made fewer than 27 starts in his six previous campaigns after breaking into their team in 2019-20 (all competitions).
Davies watched on from the sidelines as Jesse Marsch's World Cup co-hosts beat Uzbekistan 2-0 in a friendly in Edmonton on Monday, even taking to the field to complete running drills ahead of kick-off.
But just 10 days out from their Group B opener against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Davies is unsure when he will be able to play an active role.
"It feels nice to get back on the pitch and do some running. I'm happy to be home, I'm happy to be with the boys and support them, whether it's on or off the pitch," Davies said.
"We just have to see how everything goes over the next couple of days. I'll just continue my rehab, my progression, and see how I'm feeling, day by day, step by step."
Reflecting on his disrupted 2025-26 campaign, Davies added: "It was tough.
"The last year was obviously an up-and-down moment for me, with the ACL that happened, with the low muscle injuries here and there, but at the end of the day I think I just have to keep my head down, keep working. I can't let that affect me.
"Obviously, it was tough mentally and physically, but I'm feeling good now, and I'm hoping to recover as quickly as possible."
Canada face the Republic of Ireland in their final pre-World Cup friendly on Friday, at Stade Saputo in Montreal.
