England Records Its Best World Cup Finish Since 1966
For decades, England has carried the weight of a history that is as glorious as it is frustrating.
Since lifting the FIFA World Cup on home soil in 1966, the Three Lions have grown accustomed to falling just short of glory. Several talented generations have represented the country, but none managed to return England to the World Cup podium.
Until now.
By defeating France in the third-place match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Thomas Tuchel's side secured England's best finish since the historic triumph led by Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, and company six decades ago.
A Long Drought Comes to an End
After the 1966 title, England's best World Cup finish had been fourth place.
It happened for the first time at Italy 1990, when a generation led by Gary Lineker lost to Germany in the semifinals before falling to Italy in the third-place playoff.
History repeated itself at Russia 2018. Gareth Southgate's team captured the imagination of an entire nation by reaching the semifinals, but was eliminated by Croatia and then lost the third-place match against Belgium.
This time was different.
The Three Lions finally reached the World Cup podium again, something they had not accomplished since becoming champions 60 years ago.
A History Filled With Disappointment
England's World Cup record after 1966 was marked by repeated early exits.
At Mexico 1970, Mexico 1986, Korea-Japan 2002, Germany 2006, and Qatar 2022, the English were eliminated in the quarterfinals, each time leaving the feeling that they could have gone further.
At France 1998 and South Africa 2010, their journey ended in the round of 16.
One of the lowest points came at Brazil 2014, when they were eliminated in the group stage, something that had not happened since the second group phase used at Spain 1982.
There were also tournaments in which England failed to qualify altogether. West Germany 1974, Argentina 1978, and United States 1994 remain painful chapters in the country's football history.
A Project Beginning to Deliver Results
Third place was not the objective when England traveled to North America.
The dream was to win a second star.
Even so, the tournament leaves several positive signs.
The team returned to the World Cup's final four, eliminated Mexico and Norway in the knockout stage, and closed its campaign by defeating a powerhouse like France.
The tournament also confirmed the leadership of players such as Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, and Jordan Pickford, while several younger players continue to establish themselves as the foundation of England's future.
The criticism surrounding Thomas Tuchel will not completely disappear after the semifinal defeat to Argentina, but the German coach can now point to something no England team had achieved in six decades.
A place on the World Cup podium.
It is not the trophy England dreamed of winning.
But it is the country's most significant World Cup performance since that unforgettable afternoon at Wembley in 1966, when football, for once, really did come home.
