Enzo Fernandez, the leader Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid would target
The Argentine midfielder emerges as a key target for the Spanish giants under the Portuguese manager. Here are the details.
The name of Enzo Fernandez is once again at the centre of the European transfer market. The Argentine midfielder at Chelsea FC has become one of the most highly valued players among Europe’s elite clubs, with Real Madrid CF — now coached by Jose Mourinho — reportedly among the sides closely monitoring his situation.
His contract status, performances in the Premier League, and Chelsea’s financial context have all revived talk of a potential blockbuster move, one that would require a fee at the very top end of the market.
A MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR DEAL
Chelsea paid around $131 million in 2023 to sign the Argentina World Cup winner from SL Benfica, a record investment at the time of his arrival from Portugal.
Now, the London club has no intention of letting him leave for less than $130–150 million, underlining his importance within the project.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, are tracking his profile closely, valuing him as a midfielder capable of providing control, energy, and leadership in the middle of the pitch. However, any potential operation would likely depend on significant player sales within the Spanish club’s current squad.
In this context, Enzo Fernández has re-emerged as one of the most coveted names in European football and within Mourinho’s long-term planning.
THE MADRID CONNECTION
The 25-year-old remains a key figure at Chelsea, but his name has been repeatedly linked with Real Madrid in recent months.
Those close to the player suggest he would be open to a move to LaLiga, where the opportunity to work under Mourinho and compete for major titles is seen as particularly attractive.
“I would like to live in Spain. I really like Madrid; it reminds me of Buenos Aires. I would live in Madrid. A footballer lives wherever he wants,” the Argentine reportedly said in an interview with the YouTube channel Avirales, comments that later led to a fine from the Blues.
“Whenever he has a day off, he comes to Madrid because I’m there and because he has friends there. But that’s all it is — nothing more. The goal is to finish the season well at Chelsea, have a good World Cup, and then we’ll see,” said Javier Pastore, Enzo’s agent and former teammate.
WOULD HE FIT AT REAL MADRID?
At Real Madrid, his profile is seen as a natural fit to reinforce the midfield with an immediate-impact player, especially amid concerns over depth and consistency in the squad.
According to Spanish media such as Sport, Mourinho is keen to bring him in next season, with the club prepared to make an effort despite his contract running until 2032.
Pastore also highlighted his tactical versatility:
“He’s been playing in many positions over the last two years. Under Maresca he played further forward. With Rosenior, more as a double pivot. With Argentina, he plays as an advanced No. 8 with goal contributions. He’s had two years full of assists and goals, so it’s normal that coaches see him as more offensive. But he can comfortably play in both roles.”
However, Chelsea’s firm stance and the scale of the transfer fee mean any deal would be extremely complex. For now, Enzo Fernández remains one of the headline names heading into the next transfer window.
