Erling Haaland plays down expectations and insists Norway are not contenders for the World Cup title
Erling Haaland called for realism regarding Norway’s ambitions at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Although his team is enjoying a strong run, the striker believes they are still behind powerhouses such as France and rejects any favorite label.
Haaland urges Norway to stay grounded
Norway are experiencing one of the most exciting periods in their recent history. Led by a generation featuring Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard, the Scandinavian side has captured the imagination of its supporters during the FIFA World Cup 2026.
However, Haaland himself was quick to temper expectations. The Manchester City striker insisted it would be a mistake to view Norway as genuine title contenders and called for an objective assessment of the situation.
“We have to be realistic. We are not favorites to win the World Cup,” said the forward, who has been one of the standout performers of the tournament.
Respect for the world’s biggest powers
Despite Norway’s impressive performances, Haaland believes there is still a significant gap between his team and the nations that have traditionally dominated the World Cup.
The prolific striker highlighted France in particular as one of the leading forces in international football and suggested that a hypothetical final against Les Bleus would be extremely difficult for Norway.
“France would probably beat us,” admitted Haaland, making it clear that he still sees the recent runners-up as a level above Norway.
