France are looking to break a historic European World Cup record
France have enjoyed a perfect run at the 2026 World Cup, but their next challenge could see them achieve a feat that remains reserved for one of Europe’s most legendary national teams.
France close in on a historic milestone
Les Bleus have won all six of their matches at this edition, a run that gives them the chance to become only the second European team to record seven consecutive victories at a World Cup.
So far, Italy are the only European nation to have reached that figure, thanks to the historic run they put together across the 1934 and 1938 editions.
Italy set the record across two World Cups
The run began after Italy drew with Spain in the quarterfinals of the 1934 World Cup. Under the rules in place at the time, a replay was required, and the Italians won it 1-0.
From that point on, the Azzurri defeated Austria in the semifinals and Czechoslovakia in the final to claim the first of their four World Cup titles.
Italy recorded seven consecutive victories across the 1934 and 1938 World Cups, a run no other European national team has been able to equal since. Italy also became the first country to win back-to-back editions of the tournament.
