How the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot Will Be Decided
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is approaching its conclusion, but beyond crowning a world champion, one major individual award remains up for grabs: the Golden Boot. The race between Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé is set to go down to the final moments of the tournament, with both superstars involved in one of the closest Golden Boot battles in recent World Cup history.
The two forwards enter the final stretch tied on eight goals, but the captain of Argentina currently holds a slight advantage thanks to his four assists, one more than the three recorded by the France star.
However, the award is far from decided. While Messi will have the chance to improve his numbers in the World Cup final against Spain, Mbappé will get one last opportunity when France faces England in the third-place match.
How Is the Golden Boot Decided?
FIFA's regulations establish three tiebreakers to determine the winner of the tournament's top scorer award.
The first and most important is the total number of goals scored. If two or more players finish level, the second criterion comes into play: official assists, as determined by the FIFA Technical Study Group.
At the moment, that rule favors Lionel Messi, who has combined his eight goals with four assists, placing him ahead of Kylian Mbappé in the provisional standings.
If both players were to finish tied in goals and assists, the third and final tiebreaker would decide the award: total minutes played. Under that scenario, the Golden Boot would go to the player who produced those numbers in fewer minutes on the field.
Mbappé Still Holds an Important Advantage
Although Messi currently leads the standings, Mbappé remains in a strong position to claim the award.
The French striker has played 609 minutes, while the Argentine captain has accumulated 620 minutes, a difference that could prove decisive if both players finish level in goals and assists.
That lower playing time currently gives Mbappé the edge under the final tiebreaker. Much of the difference comes from the fact that Messi played two extra-time matches during Argentina's knockout victories over Cape Verde and Switzerland, significantly increasing his total minutes.
In practical terms, if Mbappé records an assist against England to finish with eight goals and four assists, while Messi neither scores nor assists in the final, the two superstars would be tied under the first two criteria. The Golden Boot would then be awarded based on total minutes played, favoring the French forward as long as he does not play substantially more minutes than Messi in his final match.
Regardless of who ultimately wins the trophy, the battle between Messi and Mbappé once again highlights the rivalry that has defined international football over the past decade. The Argentine legend is aiming to add one more individual honor to his extraordinary World Cup legacy, while the French superstar hopes to further establish himself as the heir to that generation.
Just as they did in the unforgettable 2022 FIFA World Cup final in Qatar, both players have once again reached the closing stages of the tournament competing for football's biggest individual spotlight. This time they will not face each other directly, but the destiny of the Golden Boot will remain intertwined until the final whistle of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
