Gianni Infantino could be on the verge of the biggest move of his career. While facing uncertainty over his attempt to remain FIFA president until 2031, the Swiss football executive has unexpectedly emerged as a potential candidate to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.

According to an exclusive report by the New York Post, Infantino's close relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump has led the American leader to support his candidacy. Sources close to Trump claim the president believes Infantino is "respected around the world" and possesses a unique ability to bring people together.

Public backing also came from Paolo Zampolli, Trump's special representative and a longtime friend of Infantino, who openly endorsed the idea of the FIFA president leading the UN.

The next UN Secretary-General will be selected in December. Any candidate must first secure the support of the 15-member UN Security Council—where the five permanent members hold veto power—before being approved by the UN General Assembly.

If nominated, Infantino's candidacy would break with the informal tradition of selecting a Secretary-General from Latin America or the Caribbean. However, according to the report, diplomatic sources believe that geographical rotation is flexible enough to allow a European candidate to receive broad international support.

Infantino has not publicly responded to the reports. Should the proposal gain momentum, it could provide the FIFA president with a high-profile international path at a time when his leadership within world football is facing increasing political pressure.
