Julian Quiñones matches Cuauhtémoc Blanco and Rafael Marquez's World Cup record for Mexico
The Al-Qadsiah striker has emerged as Mexico's standout performer at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Julian Quiñones brought the iconic Estadio Azteca to its feet at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after opening the scoring in Mexico's highly anticipated Round of 32 clash against Ecuador. But the celebration was about more than just the goal—it also saw him match a World Cup record shared by two Mexican legends, Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Rafael Marquez.
THE MILESTONE
The Colombia-born, naturalized Mexican striker scored his third goal of the tournament, matching the total World Cup tally of both Blanco and Márquez.
What makes Quiñones' achievement even more remarkable is that he has reached the mark in a single edition of the tournament.
Only five Mexican players have ever scored three or more goals at the FIFA World Cup. The other two are the country's all-time World Cup leading scorers, Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez and Luis "Matador" Hernandez, who each finished their careers with four goals.
QUIÑONES' GOALS
The Al-Qadsiah forward and reigning Saudi Pro League Golden Boot winner opened his World Cup account on June 11, scoring Mexico's first goal in the tournament opener against South Africa.
He found the net again on June 24, scoring Mexico's second goal in a 3-1 victory over Czechia.
Fittingly, all three of his goals have come at the Estadio Azteca—Mexico's home stadium and a venue he knows well after representing Club America of Liga MX between 2023 and 2024.
