Kylian Mbappe overtakes Just Fontaine and draws level with Gerd Muller among FIFA World Cup all-time top scorers
The French forward scored a brace in his 2026 FIFA World Cup opener and now sits just two goals behind Lionel Messi and Miroslav Klose, who share the all-time record.
With a brace in France’s 3–1 victory over Senegal in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener, Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe reached 14 World Cup goals, moving into striking distance of the all-time record shared by Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Germany’s Miroslav Klose.
The French forward has now surpassed the 13 goals scored by compatriot and legend Just Fontaine, while also equaling the 14 goals of Germany’s Gerd Muller.
He currently sits third on this elite all-time list, just one behind Ronaldo Nazario’s 15 and two shy of the record shared by Lionel Messi and Miroslav Klose, both on 16.
FRENCH LEGEND
With this milestone, Mbappé not only moved past Just Fontaine as France’s all-time leading scorer at the World Cup, but also set a new benchmark as the nation’s top scorer across all competitions in the tournament, overtaking Olivier Giroud’s long-standing record of 58 international goals.
Giroud, who retired from international duty after UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany and scored five World Cup goals, publicly praised Mbappé’s achievement.
“Congratulations to Kylian Mbappé, you did it. I’m really happy for him that he’s broken my record. I could never feel jealous about him breaking records because he’s an incredible player. He deserves it,” Giroud told the BBC, where he now works as a commentator.
A MODERN GOAL MACHINE
Mbappé continues to build a truly unique legacy in World Cups and world football, despite the challenges he faced with Real Madrid during the 2025–26 season.
After a difficult first half, his two second-half goals at the New Jersey/New York Stadium proved decisive in France’s win over Senegal, allowing him to climb further up the all-time World Cup scoring charts—after already lifting the trophy in Russia 2018 and falling just short in the 2022 Qatar final against Argentina.
At just 27 years old and in his third World Cup appearance, Mbappé still has time to extend his legacy, with matches against Norway and Iraq still ahead. France remain among the clear favourites for the title.
It was also a landmark night for “Donatello,” as he surpassed Just Fontaine—long regarded as France’s ultimate World Cup scorer. Mbappé now stands firmly among the greatest goalscorers the tournament has ever seen, both in France and worldwide.
