Merz Urges Support for Germany After World Cup Exit
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged fans to support the national team after its World Cup 2026 exit against Paraguay. His comments sparked debate as criticism of Germany and coach Julian Nagelsmann continues to grow.
Germany's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the hands of Paraguay continues to generate strong reactions across the country. Amid widespread disappointment, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called on supporters to stand behind the national team instead of mocking the players.
"We celebrate victories together. And in defeat we remain united. That is what makes us strong. Anyone who wears the eagle on their chest deserves our support, not our ridicule," Merz wrote on X, reaffirming his backing for the squad following the painful exit.
Earlier, the chancellor had praised Germany's performance despite losing to Paraguay in a penalty shootout. "Even though the elimination hurts: what a match, Germany! With your commitment and team spirit throughout this World Cup, you inspired our country. We are proud of you," he said.
Those remarks, however, triggered criticism from sections of the German media. Bild described the message as overly lenient and questioned why the government was praising a team that had suffered an early exit. The newspaper also criticized head coach Julian Nagelsmann, arguing that he should take responsibility for the disappointing campaign and accusing both the coach and the German Football Association of lacking self-criticism.
Germany's defeat has reignited debate over the future of its national team. Questions surrounding Nagelsmann's future, the need for squad renewal, and how to restore Germany's competitiveness on the international stage are now dominating the conversation after another disappointing World Cup campaign.
