Messi Backs Neymar Ahead of the 2026 World Cup
The Argentine captain said Neymar deserves to be at the World Cup because of his quality and what he represents for Brazil and world football.
Lionel Messi has publicly backed Neymar to be included in Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, insisting the forward remains one of the best players in the world regardless of concerns over his fitness.
Speaking during an interview on Lo del Pollo, Messi praised his former Barcelona and PSG teammate and emphasized the importance of having players like Neymar on football’s biggest stage.
“Neymar, regardless of his current form, will always be one of the best,” Messi said. “It would be wonderful to see him at the World Cup because of what he means to Brazil and to football.”
Neymar has not represented Brazil since suffering a serious knee injury in October 2023. Since returning to Santos last year, the Brazilian star has struggled with consistency and physical setbacks, raising doubts about whether he will be fully fit for the tournament.
Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has repeatedly stated that Neymar will only be selected if he proves he is in top condition. The Italian manager recently suggested the striker has limited time left to show he is ready for international competition again.
Despite those concerns, Messi believes Neymar’s talent and influence make him a unique figure in world football.
The prospect of Messi and Neymar appearing at another World Cup together has already generated excitement among fans, especially as it could represent one final international chapter for two of the defining stars of their era.
