Neymar Breaks Down in Tears After Emotional FIFA World Cup 2026 Debut
The Brazilian superstar admitted he became emotional after making his long-awaited return for the Seleção following nearly three years away through injury.
An emotional return to the world's biggest stage
After spending nearly three years away from the Brazilian national team, Neymar finally made his long-awaited return during Brazil's victory over Scotland at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the occasion proved to be far more emotional than just another appearance.
The Brazilian forward came off the bench to make his first international appearance in 981 days, ending a frustrating stretch filled with injuries. Once the match was over, Neymar admitted the emotions caught up with him as soon as he walked into the dressing room.
"I went into the locker room by myself and couldn't hold back the tears. It's a moment of gratitude. I thank God for giving me the opportunity to experience this again," Neymar said after the match.
A long road back to the Seleção
The Santos forward had missed Brazil's opening matches of the tournament while recovering from a calf injury that delayed his return to full fitness.
His appearance against Scotland marked the end of a lengthy rehabilitation process after multiple injuries had kept him away from international football throughout much of the current World Cup cycle.
The match also added another milestone to Neymar's remarkable career, as he became only the fourth Brazilian player to appear in four FIFA World Cups, joining legends Pelé, Djalma Santos, and Cafu.
Brazil shifts its focus to the knockout stage
Brazil's convincing victory secured first place in Group C, allowing Carlo Ancelotti's side to advance to the Round of 32 with plenty of confidence.
The Seleção will now wait to discover its next opponent, with Japan, Sweden, or even the Netherlands still in contention depending on the outcome of the final Group F matches.
Brazil continues to establish itself as one of the strongest contenders to lift the World Cup trophy.
Neymar says he's ready for more
Following the victory, Neymar was also asked whether he expects to play a bigger role as Brazil advances through the tournament.
The all-time leading scorer in Brazil's history made it clear that he feels fully prepared whenever his opportunity arrives.
"That's up to the coach. He'll make the decision. I'm ready," Neymar said, making it clear that he is eager to contribute even more as Brazil's World Cup campaign continues.
