The Finalissima everyone wanted to see! Fate sets a much bigger stage for Argentina and Spain
The Finalissima everyone wanted to see!
Football seemed to have unfinished business after Argentina and Spain were unable to play the Finalissima, the match that was supposed to pit the Copa América champions against the European champions.
For months, fans waited for a clash between two of the most powerful national teams in the world. However, issues surrounding the venue, the schedule and the organizational conditions ultimately prevented the match from taking place.
The Finalissima that could never be played
Argentina earned the right to participate after winning the 2024 Copa América, while Spain secured its place by lifting the UEFA Euro 2024 trophy.
The Finalissima was scheduled to be played on March 27, 2026, at Lusail Stadium in Qatar, the same venue where Argentina were crowned world champions in 2022.
However, the political and security situation in the Middle East meant that Qatar was no longer considered a viable option. UEFA later confirmed that the match could not be held at the originally agreed venue.
From that moment, complicated negotiations began to find a new stadium and avoid cancelation.

Argentina wanted to take the match to the Monumental
With Qatar no longer an option, Spain and European soccer authorities pushed for the match to be moved to Madrid, with the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium emerging as one of the main alternatives.
The proposal did not convince the Argentine Football Association, which believed that playing the title match on Spanish soil would give La Roja an advantage.
AFA president Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia responded by proposing that the Finalissima be held at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, the usual home of La Albiceleste.
“Spain wants the Finalissima to be played in Spain, and I want it to be played at the Monumental,” the Argentine official said during the negotiations.
With neither national team supporting a neutral venue, the talks began to run out of room for compromise.
Two versions and no agreement
UEFA claimed that it had explored several alternatives, including playing in Madrid, organizing two matches or finding another European venue, but said the proposals were not accepted by the Argentine federation.
For their part, CONMEBOL and the AFA maintained that Argentina had always been willing to play at a neutral venue and argued that holding the match exclusively in Spain would not guarantee sporting equality.
There were also disagreements regarding the available dates. With the World Cup approaching and very little space in the international calendar, finding a solution accepted by all parties ultimately became impossible.
The 2026 edition was eventually canceled, leaving the trophy without an official winner.
The World Cup that created the biggest Finalissima
However, the 2026 World Cup found an unexpected way to settle that unfinished business.
The champions of Europe and South America will finally face each other, although the Finalissima trophy will no longer be at stake.
Instead, they will compete for the most important trophy in international soccer.
