Another Blow for Spain: Dean Huijsen Withdraws From National Team Due to Injury
Bad news strikes Spain and Real Madrid once again. Dean Huijsen, the young center-back, has been forced to withdraw from Luis de la Fuente’s squad after suffering a soleus muscle injury in his left leg, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Wednesday.
In his place, the coach has called up Aymeric Laporte of Athletic Club, marking his return to the national team nearly a year after his last appearance.
What Injury Did Dean Huijsen Suffer?
The 19-year-old defender arrived at Spain’s training camp showing signs of muscle fatigue and was unable to take part in Tuesday’s session. Subsequent medical tests confirmed a soleus strain in his left leg, which will keep him sidelined for an indefinite period, according to Real Madrid’s medical report.
Huijsen now joins an extensive list of Madrid players on the injury table — including Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rüdiger, Ferland Mendy, and Trent Alexander-Arnold — all dealing with various physical problems.
His absence comes at a critical moment for Real Madrid, who are preparing for the Champions League’s return and the highly anticipated Clásico against FC Barcelona on October 26.
Who Replaces Huijsen in the Spanish Squad?
Following the setback, Luis de la Fuente acted swiftly by calling up Aymeric Laporte, whose last international appearance came on November 15, 2024, against Denmark in the UEFA Nations League.
Laporte’s return brings experience, composure, and leadership to a backline that has been hit hard by injuries. His inclusion will be key as Spain continue their push toward 2026 World Cup qualification.

How Many Injuries Is Spain Dealing With?
The situation in La Roja is increasingly worrying. Besides Huijsen, Spain will face Georgia (in Elche) and Bulgaria (in Valladolid) with a long list of absentees.
Among the injured are Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, Dani Carvajal, Rodri Hernández, Gavi, and Fabián Ruiz, all recovering from various physical issues.
With so many stars unavailable, De la Fuente will need to adjust his system and rely on the depth of his squad to maintain Spain’s momentum on the road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Meanwhile, Dean Huijsen will begin his rehabilitation at Valdebebas, under the supervision of Real Madrid’s medical staff, as he aims to return to action as soon as possible.
