(VIDEO) Mohamed Salah’s Brace in Liverpool vs. Bournemouth
Salah Keeps Making History in the Premier League
Mohamed Salah, the undisputed star of this Premier League season, secured Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Bournemouth with a brace, putting all the pressure on Arsenal, who must defeat Manchester City on Sunday to stay in the title race.
The Egyptian now has 178 goals in the English league, becoming the seventh all-time top scorer in the competition. With this achievement, he surpasses Frank Lampard and now sets his sights on Argentine legend Sergio 'Kun' Agüero, who scored 184 goals for Manchester City and remains the league’s all-time top foreign scorer.
Liverpool Capitalizes as Salah Shines
Salah, whose contract renewal remains uncertain and could leave for free in June, opened the scoring for Liverpool in southern England after a controversial penalty was awarded against Cook, who tripped Cody Gakpo in full stride. The foul was given after a lengthy VAR review, and the Premier League later confirmed via social media that Cook had indeed clipped the Dutch forward from behind, despite the confusion caused by multiple replays.
From the penalty spot, the Egyptian showed no hesitation. A powerful, low strike left Kepa with no chance, barely moving on his line. Ironically, in this same stadium and same goal, Salah had missed a penalty in a Liverpool defeat a couple of years ago. This time, he made amends.
Andoni Iraola's side deserved to equalize, but aside from having a goal ruled out for offside, their finishing let them down. The clearest chance came from Marcus Tavernier, who fired a 30-yard strike against the post. The rebound fell to Justin Kluivert, but incredibly, from just five yards out, he blasted the ball over the bar.
With Bournemouth squandering chances, Salah sealed the match with a stunning curling shot over Kepa.
The Egyptian now has 21 goals and 13 assists this season, cementing his place as the Golden Boot frontrunner, with a three-goal lead over Erling Haaland.
The victory takes Liverpool to 56 points, nine clear of Arsenal and Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile, Bournemouth's 12-match unbeaten run comes to an end, leaving them in seventh place with 40 points.
