Is Van Dijk Leaving Liverpool? Here’s What The Dutch Defender Said About His Future
The Dutch center-back hasn’t ruled out staying at Anfield but admits talks are still ongoing. “I love the club and the fans, but nothing is certain yet,” he said after the defeat to Fulham.
Progress in talks, but no deal yet
With less than three months left on his contract, Virgil van Dijk spoke to the English press about his future at Liverpool. After the surprising 3–2 loss to Fulham, the club captain confirmed that negotiations are underway, but no agreement has been reached yet.
“Yes, there has been progress,” the 33-year-old said when asked about a potential renewal. However, when pushed on whether that meant he would stay, he was cautious: “I don’t know, we’ll see. These are internal talks. I love the club, I love the fans… we wanted to reward them today.”
Van Dijk, one of the club’s most iconic players, is set to see his current deal expire on June 30, 2025—just like Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Uncertainty has surrounded his future, especially after the Champions League elimination to PSG, when the defender said he had no idea where he would play next season.
Liverpool don’t want to lose their leader
Despite the setback at Craven Cottage, Liverpool still lead the Premier League with an 11-point advantage over Arsenal. With seven games to go, just four more wins would secure their second league title in the last 30 years.
Still, Van Dijk’s situation is delicate. He remains a regular starter and has helped the team keep 13 clean sheets this season, but recent matches against Everton and Fulham exposed some physical decline, as he struggled in key duels.
The club recognizes his value both on and off the pitch. Reports suggest the board is considering offering a short-term extension while also scouting for a long-term replacement in defense.
Future at Anfield still undecided
With interest from the Saudi Pro League and top European clubs, Van Dijk’s future remains uncertain. Yet, his love for Liverpool and connection with the fans keep him focused on finishing the season strong.
“I want the fans to be with us on Sunday. They always make the stadium an amazing place,” the Dutchman said, already looking ahead to the upcoming clash against West Ham United.
Whatever his final decision may be, Van Dijk has already left a lasting legacy at Liverpool. The only question now is whether his story at Anfield continues—or comes to a close.
