Liverpool Takes Revenge On Manchester City and Consolidates as Premier League Leader
Years of repressed vengeance taken in just one week. In a matter of days, Liverpool settled scores with Real Madrid, defeating them in the Champions League (2-0), and with Manchester City, whom they overcame to extend their lead to eleven points in the Premier League with another 2-0 win.
The Reds, after beating their European nemesis midweek, took revenge on the team that had snatched two league titles from them by just one point, deepening the crisis of Pep Guardiola, who has not seen a victory in his last seven games (six losses and one draw). The Spanish coach fielded a timid-looking team at Anfield.
Relentless pressure suffocates City
Liverpool smelled blood. They knew that Manchester City was wounded, overwhelmed by an unprecedented situation under Guardiola's tenure. From the opening whistle, the home team applied intense pressure, disrupting every pass from goalkeeper Stefan Ortega and forcing the central defenders into mistakes.
It took City twenty minutes to cross the halfway line, during which Liverpool could have scored multiple goals. Virgil van Dijk hit the post with a header, and moments later, another attempt narrowly missed the goal. Amid these chances, Mohamed Salah shone brightly.
The Egyptian, at a crucial moment in his career, faced his marker and delivered a cross-shot to the far post, where Cody Gakpo dove in to connect for the first goal of the match. Although the goal belonged to the Dutchman, the crowd chanted for Salah, their "Egyptian king," who could be living his final months at Anfield.
The decisive blow came in the second half
In the second half, the team led by Arne Slot continued creating opportunities but also wasted them. Salah missed a one-on-one against Ortega, and Trent Alexander-Arnold saw his close-range shot blocked. Gakpo was also close to scoring again after dribbling past Kyle Walker, but his shot was saved by the German keeper.
Finally, the second goal came thanks to an action from Luis Díaz, who recovered the ball, faced Ortega, and forced a clear penalty. Salah, from the penalty spot, was clinical and sent a clear message: he deserves a contract renewal.
With this victory, Liverpool takes a significant lead in the Premier League title race, while Manchester City and Guardiola face a historic crisis, with rival fans chanting about a potential end to his tenure with the team.
