Manchester City Will Have To Pay A Fortune To Benjamin Mendy
Manchester City will have to pay the "majority" of his salary to former player Benjamin Mendy, who was acquitted of rape and sexual assault last year.
The French player, who was accused in August 2021 by several women and acquitted last year, sued City for unpaid wages during the time he was suspended, amounting to around £11 million ($14 million) before taxes. This salary covers the period from when he was suspended in September 2021 until he left the club in June 2023.
A judge from the UK Employment Tribunal ruled that City was within its rights not to pay Mendy while he was in police custody for about five months, but that the suspension by the English Football Association (FA), which prevented him from playing or training, was not an excuse for not paying the player.
The total amount of money Mendy will receive, described as "the majority of his salary," will be determined in a future hearing.
After leaving Manchester City in the summer of 2023, Mendy signed with Lorient in the French league, where he still plays in Ligue 2. The 2018 World Cup champion with the French national team played fifteen matches last season, but has not participated this season.
