OFFICIAL: Manchester United Appoints New Manager
The Premier League club Manchester United announced this Friday the hiring of Portuguese coach Rúben Amorim.
Premier League club Manchester United announced on Friday the signing of Portuguese manager Rúben Amorim, who will take over from Dutchman Erik Ten Hag, dismissed last Monday.
Amorim, 39, has managed Sporting CP since 2020, winning two league titles, two domestic cups, and one Super Cup with the Lisbon-based club. Previously, he also won a Portuguese Cup with Sporting Braga.
United activated Amorim’s release clause at approximately $10.6 million, adding an extra $1 million to secure his services. The Portuguese manager has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, running until the summer of 2027, with an option for an additional year.
Ten Hag, who joined United in April 2022, was relieved of his duties on Monday following a series of poor performances in both the Premier League and Europa League. Former Dutch forward Ruud Van Nistelrooy took over on a temporary basis, leading United to a 5-2 victory over Leicester City in the League Cup round of 16.
Amorim is the sixth permanent manager appointed by Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013, following David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal, José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and Ten Hag. He is also the first manager hired under Jim Ratcliffe, INEOS owner and recent 27.7% shareholder of the club.
United’s initial plan was for Amorim to begin managing the team in time for this weekend’s match against Chelsea. However, Van Nistelrooy will remain in charge for now, with Amorim set to officially join on November 11, ahead of the international break.
