The front page of Portuguese football and Liverpool FC bid a final farewell on Saturday to Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who tragically passed away in a traffic accident in Zamora, Spain. The emotional funeral was held in Gondomar, northern Portugal, where both grew up and began their football careers.

The ceremony at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar was attended by prominent figures from world football. Among those present were Portugal national team coach Roberto Martínez—who traveled from the United States, where he is following the Club World Cup—and the president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), Pedro Proença.
Also in attendance were national team teammates such as Bernardo Silva, João Moutinho, Rúben Dias, João Félix, Rui Patrício, and Rúben Neves, who traveled after his team, Al Hilal, was eliminated from the Club World Cup.
Liverpool paid tribute with two floral jerseys: Diogo Jota’s number 20, carried by Virgil van Dijk, and André Silva’s number 30, carried by Jordan Henderson. Also present were Tiago Alcântara, Fabinho, Ricardo Carvalho, Nelson Semedo, Jorge Mendes (Jota’s agent), and André Villas-Boas, president of FC Porto.
The coffins were escorted by family, friends, and players into the church. The Bishop of Porto, Manuel Linda, officiated the mass and offered heartfelt words for Jota’s three young children: Dinis, Mafalda, and Duarte, aged four, two, and eight months.
“It’s hard to see an adult cry, but it’s even harder to see a child cry,” the bishop expressed, highlighting the magnitude of the pain affecting the family and the entire community.
Diogo Jota, aged 28, had married Rute Cardoso, his partner of 13 years, on June 22. His brother André, aged 25, was a footballer for Penafiel, a team in Portugal’s second division.
